WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODIES WHILE SLEEPING?
Your body is constantly changing and working while you sleep. Your overall health is dependent on how much rest you get. This is because your mind needs to slow down to process the recovery of muscles and tendons. These are essential processes. But what happens to your body when you get forty winsks?
Sleep cycles
The body goes through four to five stages of sleep during a normal sleep cycle. Each stage is comprised of four sleep stages. These include rapid eye movements (REM) as well as non-REM sleep. These stages are very different. Non-REM activity is the first three stages. The first stage is when you go to sleep. Stage two is when your mind and body slow down. It’s the easiest stage to wake up.
Stage three, also known as deep sleep, is when your body enters recovery mode and slows down even more. Your brain activity slows down, and you will see patterns in your pulses of activity. Experts believe this helps to prevent the body from being awakened while it is recovering.
Stage four is REM Sleep. This stage is when your brain activity returns to normal levels. It’s also the time you are most likely to have vivid, intense dreams. The average sleep cycle lasts 70 to 120 minutes. However, most of the time you will sleep at night is non-REM. The latter half of your sleep is where REM sleep occurs.
What happens in your brain and body?
Breathing and heart beat: Your breathing rate and speed will be slower in non-REM sleep, and it will be the slowest during stage three. Then, when you are in REM sleep it will speed up and become irregular. Similar to stage 1, your heart rate will slow, then slow down in stage 3. Then, it will speed up almost as fast when you are awake in REM sleep.
Muscles: When you go to non-REM sleep, your muscles relax and your energy expenditure drops. Then they will become paralysed in REM sleep. This is to prevent your body from achieving vivid dreams.
Brain activity: NonREM sleep improves brain function during the waking hours, while REM sleeping benefits cognitive abilities, including memory consolidation.
Hormones: The body’s internal clock regulates hormone production and sleep controls your appetite.
